The sun got quite a workout from Maryland last year, according to a report by the Baltimore Business Journal. The state added 74 megawatts of solar power in 2012, garnering 8th place on a list of solar power use by the Environment Maryland Research and Policy Center.

Recently, University Park Elementary School became the first public school in Prince George's County to boast a solar array on its roof. The array will help teach children about clean energy and produces enough electricity to power nine homes annually.

When factoring solar power added in relation to the state’s population, Maryland was 10th, with 13 watts per person. In terms of cumulative solar capacity, Maryland is 14th in the nation.
