University Park Bids Bye-bye to Bamboo

A swath of unruly bamboo was cleared from Rt. 1 on Thursday.

In a move sure please many University Park residents the Maryland State Highway Association has cleared the encroaching bamboo from the section of Rt. 1 in University Park between Beachwood and Pineway Roads.

Patch first reported on the bamboo problem in mid July when University Park Councilman Len Carey (Ward 4) reported at a council meeting that he been receiving complaints from residents that the bamboo was making it difficult to navigate the sidewalk.

University Park Public Works Director Mickey Beall told Patch that he first contacted SHA about the bamboo problem around July 21. Beall called SHA about the problem again on Monday and was assured that the bamboo would be taken care of by the end of the week.

Thursday afternoon, an SHA crew spent part of the day cutting bamboo and other debris from the right-of-way on Rt. 1 in University Park.

The path is now free and clear for walkers, runners, and stroller pushers in University Park.
