UPES to Mark Arbor Day With Tree Planting Ceremony

Students will also share songs, poems, and other readings.

Fresh off of Saturday's Azalea Classic, students from University Park Elementary School will participate in an Arbor Day celebration this Friday, April 27. The 45-minute program will kick off at 12:45 p.m. in the town park across from University Park's 9/11 memorial.  Kindergarten and Pre-K students from UPES are scheduled to share songs, poems, and other readings to mark the occasion. A Deodar Cedar will also be planted to commemorate the occasion. Arbor Day honors the vital role trees play in Earth's ecosystem and encourages groups and individuals to plant and care for them. It was first observed in Nebraska in 1872 but has since become celebrated in many parts of the world. For more information, visit the town's website.

We're losing more and more of our wooded areas here in PG County and at some point we need to stop and ask how this will affect future generations. Besides being just plain pretty, the trees provide shelter for birds and animals, …   more ›

School Officials Face Hectic First Day of School

While students face those first-day jitters, officials are working hard to make sure everything runs smoothly.

For most, the hustle and bustle of the first day of school is finished by the time the first bell rings. But for principals and secretaries the madness has only just begun. By 11 a.m., the chatter of children echoes down a corridor from the cafeteria at Riverdale Elementary School. Principal Cheryl Hughes is on lunch duty. Her expression is calm, but she speaks quickly, like someone who has had too much coffee, or has been dealing with the stresses of a school that holds over 700 students. “Things went very smooth this morning,” she says -- this, while keeping a vigilant eye on the students snacking at the tables in the next room. To facilitate a smoother morning and the impending chaos of dismissal this afternoon, Hughes has taken some …

Thank goodness for the dedication of teachers, principals, secretaries and other staff at our schools. Children are our most important asset in society and under the care of our school staff during the day. Give them support when you can; a simple "thank you" will do.   more ›

Washington Capitals Visit University Park Elementary for Hockey School Clinic

The Capitals donated a set of floor hockey equipment to UPES this week.

Over the last three years, the Washington Capitals have affected upwards of 5,000 students through their Hockey School program sponsored by Capital One Bank. Hockey School is a one-day clinic put on by select Capitals players and coaches at elementary schools all around the DMV Area. This week, University Park Elementary School was lucky enough to experience what 30 others have since 2007. According to an official Capitals press release, Capitals players Mike Knuble and Michal Neuvirth and assistant coach Bob Woods led the clinic at UPES with added entertainment from mascot Slapshot. The clinic included fundamental drills, equipment-use demonstrations and scrimmages to top it all off. To ensure that UPES students continue to benefit from …
