Beltway Triple Lane Closure Starts in Maryland Friday

The State Highway Administration recommends taking detour routes. The work on the outer loop work will begin at Kenilworth Avenue at 9 p.m.

Three right lanes on the northbound outer loop of the Capital Beltway at Kenilworth Avenue (Rt. 201) will close Friday night, according to the State Highway Administration. As a result of the triple-lane closure, drivers are encouraged to take detour routes, according to Charlie Gischlar, SHA spokesman. SHA is removing a demolition shield it put up as part of ongoing bridge work in Greenbelt. The work will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting. Lanes will reopen to traffic by 8 a.m. Saturday, SHA reports. The highway administration plans to close one right lane at 9 p.m., two at 10 p.m., and three at midnight. Officials: Fire Engine Placement Saved Lives at Crash Scene

Engine 111 shielded emergency personnel from the potentially fatal impact of a fast-moving car, authorities said.

Prince George's County fire officials say the careful placement of a fire engine at the scene of a recent crash in College Park may have made the difference between life and death. On Aug. 18 at around 4:15 a.m., fire, EMS, and Maryland State Police units responded to an accident on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway between Route 1 and the I-95 split. As emergency personnel tended to motorists and surveyed the damage from the collision, another car reportedly slammed into aBranchville Volunteer Fire Company engine (no. 111) stationed at the scene. State Troopers Issue Almost 100 Speeding Citations in Enforcement Effort

A stepped-up traffic enforcement on the Capital Beltway stopped 195 cars between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Maryland State Troopers arrested three people for drunk driving and one for a drug violation during a traffic enforcement initiative on the Prince George's County portion of the Beltway late Friday night and early Saturday morning. Troopers stopped 195 vehicles and issued 91 speeding citations, according to a press release from the Maryland State Police. Another 11 people were charged with driving on suspended or revoked licenses. The stepped-up efforts were part of "Operation Centipede," the goal of which is to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries in that region. 20 Extra Troopers Set to Guard the Beltway

In the wake of Tuesday's six-vehicle accident, Operation Centipede takes effect tonight.

"Operation Centipede" shifts into high gear tonight. Maryland State Police will deploy 20 extra troopers to saturate the Capital Beltway on a mission to cut back on injuries and save lives. In the wake of Tuesday morning's six-vehicle beltway accident near Ritchie Marlboro Road that left two people dead and two injured, the Maryland State Police have issued an early warning to drivers. Expect to see (or not) additional troopers roaming the entire length of the beltway in Prince George's County, beginning Friday night and continuing through the early morning hours of Saturday.
