Silver Spring women among first to marry.
The long-awaited enactment of Maryland’s Civil Marriage Protection Act on Jan. 1 saw a number of same-sex marriages across the state, including the union between two Silver Spring women. The wedding of Ruth Siegel and Nina Nethery was one of a number of same-sex ceremonies profiled in a recent Washington Post story about New Year’s Day weddings. The couple’s ceremony began virtually as soon as the law took effect, at 12:02 a.m., with each participant wearing a baseball cap that read either Bride One or Bride Two. A member of Westboro Baptist Church, the group that picketed Northwestern High School in Prince George's County last year is headed for Sandy Hook Elementary School. Westboro Baptist is known for picketing funerals of soldiers and AIDS victims and now says it plans to picket Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to Examiner.com. A day after Friday's shooting in Newtown, CT, where police said 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother and then 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, Westboro Baptist member Shirley Phelps-Roper posted a message on Twitter that the group would "sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment." More than 200 people showed up to exercise their First Amendment rights to protest at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville this morning. Many signs show support of the students at Northwestern High School.
Hyattsville residents gathered to make signs to be used in a protest at Northwestern High School on the morning of March 1. The Westboro Baptist Church, known for its anti-homosexual stance and for picketing at the funerals of soldiers, has said that it will send a group of people to protest outside of the school from 9 to 9:30 a.m. A group from Hyattsville is scheduled to gather at the University Hills Duck Pond about 7:30 a.m. before organizing and then walking down Adelphi Road to the school.
The Northwestern PTSA is working to raise funds during the Westboro Baptist Church.
The Westboro Baptist Church is planning to protest outside Northwestern High School in Hyattsville on March 1, likely with signs chiding homosexuals. Some residents and members of area churches gathered Sunday night to make signs that will be used in a counter-protest on the morning of March 1 at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville. The counter-protest is in response to a planned protest by the Westboro Baptist Church, which is known for its anti-homosexual stance and for protesting the funerals of fallen soldiers. Residents from Hyattsville are planning a similar sign making event from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. tonight at Hyattsville Elementary School.
