Calling the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model “no longer sustainable,” the U.S. Postal Service Wednesday morning announced it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. The plan to change delivery from six days a week to five would only affect first-class mail. Packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail would still be delivered on Saturdays, and local post offices will remain open for business Saturdays. Post offices will remain open Saturdays. The Riverdale Park and University Park area has two full-service locations: Riverdale (6411 Baltimore Ave.) and Kenilworth (6210 Kenilworth Ave.). The privateers are having their way, doing everything they can to make sure the Post Office can't work, then waiting to pick up the pieces - at a profit. My wife's business will be hit hard by the recent rate hikes that flew in under the radar. A 6 oz parcel to Canada - a big part of her business - used to ship for $3.60. Now, suddenly, it's $8.55.
