Beltway Triple Lane Closure Starts in Maryland Friday

The State Highway Administration recommends taking detour routes. The work on the outer loop work will begin at Kenilworth Avenue at 9 p.m.

Three right lanes on the northbound outer loop of the Capital Beltway at Kenilworth Avenue (Rt. 201) will close Friday night, according to the State Highway Administration. As a result of the triple-lane closure, drivers are encouraged to take detour routes, according to Charlie Gischlar, SHA spokesman. SHA is removing a demolition shield it put up as part of ongoing bridge work in Greenbelt. The work will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting. Lanes will reopen to traffic by 8 a.m. Saturday, SHA reports. The highway administration plans to close one right lane at 9 p.m., two at 10 p.m., and three at midnight. D.C. Region No. 1 in Traffic Congestion

A report on U.S. traffic delays finds the D.C. area tied with Chicago.

Commuters, the “aha” moment has arrived in the form of a report released Thursday, and it’s not a glee-filled moment. Unfortunately, your worst fears and concerns have been confirmed: The Washington metropolitan area is No. 1 in traffic delays. The Texas Transportation Institute’s (TTI) annual study on nationwide traffic congestion paints a bleak picture for our area.
