Often we don't appreciate the phase we are in, when we are in it. A lesson learned from a stranger, hits home.
When the boys were babies, old men and women would "ooh" and "ahh" over the handlebar of the stroller at my angelic sleeping child and say “they grow up so fast” a million times. I’d kindly nod my head and smile, exhausted from lack of sleep and counting down the days to the monthly Moms Night Out when I could drink way too much and pretend I was 25 again—of course paying for that decision for hours the next day. At the doctor’s office, I was having small talk with a nurse and inevitably the conversation comes to children—"Do you have any? How many? What are their ages?" I shared my sons’ ages and she immediately gets a nostalgia look in her eye, “Oh that’s such a wonderful age. Legos, Star Wars…Oh, I just love that age.” I nodded my head…

Maryland staff wants to hear cawing from Six Flags' president in California, but he's planning on a 49ers win with some Kaepernicking instead.
Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro, MD, has bet Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in California that it is the Ravens, and not the 49ers, who will bring home the Lombardi trophy after Super Bowl XLVII. One of the parks is in for a big surprise, as both of their presidents are convinced of victory. "There's a lot of smack talk going on here between the two parks," said Havilah Ross, Six Flags America spokeswoman. Among other hat-eating feats, the park president whose team loses has to don the winning team's jersey and cap all day — plus lift high a large banner outside his park congratulating the winners. Update, 11 a.m.: The University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted unanimously Monday morning to accept an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference and leave the Atlantic Coast Conference, ESPN reported. It's unclear when Maryland would make the move, but a buy out from the ACC could cost as much as $50 million, according to ESPN. Should the state pass stricter requirements when it comes to regulating and treating student athlete concussions?
Sports practices for public schools in Prince George's and Montgomery counties start up soon—but new state regulations may mean changes for athletes and coaches. The state school board passed new requirements last week that say athletic coaches in Maryland must be trained in identifying serious head injuries, The Baltimore Sun reports. Thomas Hearn, a Montgomery County parent, spoke to the state school board in May after his son sustained a concussion, and pushed for members to consider limiting the number of contact practices in a week, The Sun reported. They are among the best of the best and are ready to prove their mettle—530 athletes from 45 states who will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. They are competing in sports as diverse as athletics, fencing, rowing, soccer and basketball. For everyone from swimmer Katie Ledecky, 15, to 54-year-old equestrian jumper Karen O’Connor, these Games represent the culmination of all the hard work and dedication they've put in to win a coveted Olympic medal. This is the first time Prince George's County has hosted the event.
Prince George’s County will host the 112th Army-Navy game to be played at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday at FedEx Field. This is the first time that the county has hosted this event. “I am honored that Prince George’s County will be hosting the 112th Army-Navy football game at FedEx Field,” stated County Executive Rushern Baker in a press release. “This is ‘America’s Game,’ an event that unites veterans, families of service members, active duty personnel—both at home and abroad—and Americans across the country." Prince George’s County is home to about 70,000 veterans, as well as thousands of active duty personnel and Joint Base Andrews, Baker’s release stated.

Student-athletes can now fail a class and remain a part of an athletic team.
Prince George's County Public Schools' student-athletes can now fail a class and participate in sports, according to The Washington Post. Last week, the Post reported that the school board made the change in an effort to align themselves with other county school systems. Students must still earn a 2.0 grade point average, however they can do so without passing every course. The school system also adopted a $50 annual fee for athletes this year. After watching her mom battle cancer, columnist Ann Brennan took a different approach to health and fitness.
I was a junior in high school when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I held her hand while her surgeon performed the needle biopsy. I sat beside her taking notes as the doctor told her it was indeed cancer. I was in the waiting room with my grandmother, brother and sister as she had the radical mastectomy. And I was there when the doctors returned several days later to tell us that the cancer had progressed much further than they had expected, and she should set her affairs in order. It wasn’t until the following year that I realized how scared I was of facing the same fate. I had gone in for my annual checkup and realized something I had denied for several years. Brunchbird- No I'm not passing judgement at all! For kids who enjoy sports and want to do it I think it's great that they have that outlet. My children are not interested at all and I don't enjoy the pressure from other parents to push my sons to try it. Making it seem as if my sons will not be as well rounded without team sports. This is also an issue of gender. I doubt if my children were girls… more ›
