The Santa Situation

Do you tell your children that Santa isn't real? Do you let them follow the time-honored tradition? Here's what one local mom has to say about Jolly Ole' Saint Nick.

I can remember as a kid being very excited about Christmas—that nervous feeling you get as you stand in line to ask the man in red for what your little heart desires to see under the tree Christmas morning. Then later in life, when I found out the whole thing was just a myth, I accepted it and moved on. It was a little bit of a letdown, like finding out the wizard is really just a man behind the curtain. But I was never angry with Mom and Dad for propelling fictional characters like Santa, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. Festival of Lights Offers Unique Gifts from Local Artists

Artists and crafters will travel to Greenbelt from across Maryland this weekend — and Santa will fly in from much further north.

It’s that time again for an artists fair extraordinaire. This weekend arts and crafts makers will converge on Greenbelt to kick off its Festival of Lights. Festival-goers can buy unique handmade arts and crafts for holiday gifts, including pottery, jewelry, wood working, fine arts, stationery, handbags, textiles, spa products and more. Many of the artists and crafters are Maryland locals from cities such as College Park, Riverdale Park, University Park, Laurel, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Ellicott City and Greenbelt — of course. Santa Claus will start things off on Friday night when he helps light the holiday tree. Afterward the Greenbelt Museum will offer free tours of its historic home, decorated for the season. A juried art and craft …

My point, DC, is that I am surprised a jewish holiday is being celebrated in such an odd way. I don't recall jews having decorated trees in their homes, though I know a good number of muslims that do-- so maybe it's a muslim tree they're putting up? I don't think they (jews nor muslims) worship Saint Nicholas, either. So why the subterfuge? Are the jews trying to pull something over on the rest …   more ›

Santa Claus Makes His Mall Debut

Head on over to the Mall at Prince George's for a visit with Kris Kringle.

Santa has officially swept off his sleigh and into the Mall at Prince George's just in front of the Macy's store. Interested in meeting him, or letting him know your Christmas wishes? Make your way to the mall until Christmas Eve for photos with Old St. Nick. The mall is offering digital photo packages with free Shutterfly gift cards and "Shining Stars" plush toys, which allow kids to name their own star. Santa will also host breakfast from 9 a.m.  to 10 a.m. on Dec. 4. The event will include free face painting, balloon creations and door prizes. Kids also get a free gift bag. Breakfast costs $5 per child, or you can bring in a new, unwrapped toy to benefit the WHUR toy drive. Santa will be at the mall until 8 p.m. on Dec. 24, when he …
