Treacherous Wintry Mix for Metro Area

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory.

  The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties until 1 p.m. today. The alert calls for a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain, with possible accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. In a statement released by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) administrator Melinda B. peters urges motorists to "keep their speeds down as lighter traffic can result in increased travel speeds," and "to exercise extreme caution today." Beware: Monday Commuting Nightmare Predicted

Nearly 70 traffic lights remain dark or in flashing mode, while Metro must detour around downed power lines.

With hundreds of traffic signals still out and downed tree limbs blocking Metro routes, Monday's commute is shaping up to be especially bad as the Washington, DC region struggled to recover from Friday's powerful storms. The Maryland State Highway Administration is urging commuters to take public transportation as they head into work Monday, while Metro warned of rail and bus delays. According Prince George's County officials, a dozen traffic lights are non-operational on county roads, while 54 lights remain dark on roads managed by the SHA. Major Section of Intercounty Connector Opens Today

The extension will stretch the ICC from I-270/I-370 in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George's County.

The fresh blacktop of the $2.45 billion Intercounty Connector will open today at 6 a.m. after more than 50 years of debate and four years of construction. The section opening today will allow commuters to drive quickly from I-370 in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George's County. Now, all that's left to build of the 18.2 mile highway is a small stretch connecting I-95 to Route 1, which is set to begin construction later this year or early next year. Update: Friday Morning Highway Closures

The Maryland State Highway Administration reported some roads are still closed.

Update, Sept. 9, 9:30 a.m.: The Maryland State Highway Administration reported the following roads remain closed: MD 381 Mattawoman Drive to Missouri Avenue MD 725 between US 301 and Gov. Oden Bowie Drive US 301 between MD 725 and MD 4 US 301  NB AT MD 4 NB  They also reported that on MD 5 NB between Accokeek Road and Brandywine Road, the right lane is closed Update, 6:15 p.m.: The National Weather Service (NWS) said radar indicated another round of showers and thunderstorms is developing over southern Maryland. It responded by extending the flood warning until 8:30 p.m. for Prince George’s County and much of the area. A flash flood watch will remain in effect until 2 a.m. Friday for Prince George’s County and much of the area, as well. …
