But co-owner Fereydoun Salimi says his business is 'just a restaurant.'
The co-owner of Riverdale Park's Calvert House Inn says town authorities had it wrong Sunday when they fined his business for illegally serving as a dance hall. "As far as I know, I'm just a restaurant," said Fereydoun Salimi, who's operated Calvert House for 30 years with his wife, Sousan Salimi. According to Fereydoun, town and county inspectors first visited the restaurant on Thursday, April 26 to notify him that he didn't have a permit to host a disc jockey—something that the restaurant frequently does on weekends. Salimi said that while he believed a DJ was allowed as background accompaniment for karaoke, he was able to have to have his county-issued certificate of occupancy changed late last week to specifically allow for a DJ. "The knowledge gained can be put to use immediately." Powell, a ten-year veteran of the RPPD, was able to attend the school's 327th session through grants from the …

Sgt. Jeremy Emereck, Sgt. Brian Slattery, and Cpl. Larry Hayes were honored at a town council meeting earlier this month.
Three members of the Riverdale Park Police Department were honored earlier this month for exemplary service leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects in two cases. Sgt. Jeremy Emereck was commended for detaining a man found guilty of impersonating a police officer and carrying a handgun without a license. Last summer, after responding to what turned out to be a false burglar alarm, Emereck noticed a man at the McDonald's on Riverdale Road carrying a holstered handgun and wearing a jacket that read "Police." When he questioned the suspect, who was employed by McDonald’s as a security officer, the sergeant began to believe something was off. The man claimed to be employed by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional …

Something is very wrong here. Even if people were dancing, there is no precedent for fining him $1000. I've driven by the Calvert House numerous times and they maintain a decent and respectable facade along the route one corridor. I would be saddened if they were to go out of business. If a few people decide to dance, then let them dance, it's not a big deal. There are far worse things going on …   more ›
