Prince George's fire chief to send out a message to residents about smoke alarms.
A deadly fire in Glenarden, MD just six miles outside of Riverdale Park's city limits claimed the life of one man and two children Thursday morning and injured three others, according to Prince George's County's fire department. Now, county Fire Chief Marc Bashoor wants to remind residents about the need of smoke alarms after fire investigators discovered no smoke alarms were present in the home on Leslie Avenue. "I could not be prouder of our men and women, volunteer and career, who work hard every day and who, once again, this morning showed that valiant courage that lies within us all," Bashoor said in a note, which was forwarded to Patch by the county's branch of the NAACP. From Riverdale Park Day to her work for the fire department, colleagues say Johns goes above and beyond.
Nova Johns thought her volunteers at Riverdale Park Day should get pizza. So she convinced Domino’s – which was there to sell, not to donate its pies – to join other vendors and give the hard-working volunteers a free meal. This is just one more way that Johns, the Riverdale Park Day event planner, considers the small details and keeps the event on track. Johns, 29, coordinates with Ward 5 councilman Raymond Rivas to organize the festivities. Pepco has been working diligently in University Park to restore power since around 1 p.m. Sunday.
Update, Aug. 28, 8:35 p.m.: University Park residents won't be left in the dark Sunday night, as Mayor John Tabori announced that Pepco has restored the power in many residents' homes. Residents who are continuing to have issues should report problems directly to Pepco by calling them at 202-872-3432.
