College Park florist runs away with the vote in this week's Readers' Choice awards.
The public has spoken. And it has declared College Park based Wood's Flowers and Gifts as the Readers' Choice for the best florist in the area. Wood's Flowers and Gifts won by snagging 65 percent of the vote. They also won the praise of local resident Sarah Wayland. "Wood's Florist has been my florist for 15+ years now," wrote Wayland in a five star review of the business posted earlier this week. "They create beautiful arrangements, and they are very nice people." Coming in second is Balloons by the Basket Gourmet Shop & Tiger Lilly Florist in Hyattsville, which earned 26 percent of our readers' vote. Congratulations to Wood's Flowers and Gifts.

Petal peddlers face off for florist bragging rights in this week's Readers' Choice survey.
Readers' Choice is back this week, and with flowers blooming all over the place as the weather heats up, we want to know where you go to get a beautiful bouquet. Quality flowers, needless to say, are an important consideration when picking out your preferred petal peddler. But maybe you're won over by U.S. Route 1 convenience, as is the case with a number of our shops like Wood's Flowers and Gifts in College Park and Balloons by The Basket Gourmet Shop & Tiger Lilly Florist in Hyattsville. Beltway Blossom Shop in Greenbelt Plaza has the benefit of being located in a mall, so you can get some shopping done while you wait for your arrangements. Just about all of the shops offer online ordering, so perhaps a smooth digital experience is …

Voters feel a sport isn't a sport without some wilderness.
REI of College Park was the resounding winner in this week's Readers' Choice poll, even if it was with an un-resounding number of votes. Monday through Friday morning, Patch readers of College Park, Greenbelt, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and University Park voted for the best store in the area to buy sporting goods. Apparently, athletics are akin with mud and campfire smell for many Patch readers. REI earned nine of 10 votes. The member-based co-op offers shoes and gear for camping, hiking, climbing, fitness and travel. "REI is hands down the best place to go on your list," wrote one commenter. "They are pricier than the others but the selection and quality of goods is FAR superior. When I need actual sporting goods, I find Modell's…

What salon or barbershop in the area is the best place to take your kid for a haircut?
It's that time again. You cringe as your son shakes his head over and over to get the hair out of his eyes. If he doesn't get his hair cut soon, you'll have a mini-Fabio on your hands. But taking your child to get his or her hair cut is torture, not just for them, but for you, too; remember the embarrassment the last time your son or daughter squirmed in the swivel chair and screamed at the very sight of the scissors? Or maybe you're lucky, and your kid enjoys the day at the salon. Either way, there's something to be said for a kid-friendly salon or barbershop that makes haircut day something to look forward to for all. For this week's Readers' Choice, we're asking what places around here are the best for a kid’s haircut. Vote in the poll …

The Greenbelt facility ran away with the vote. Several other contenders also placed well in Patch's poll for best workout spot.
Gold's Gym amassed the most votes for best workout spot in this week's five-community poll. With a strong showing of 54 votes out of 126 total votes, the Greenbelt gym edged out nine other contenders. Commenters praised Gold's Gym for its friendly staff, great environment, selection of equipment, and daycare. For folks in the other communities polled—College Park, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, and University Park—who don't often find themselves in Greenbelt, or for those who want to consider all their options, here are the top vote winners for the other three cities in the poll: University of Maryland Campus Recreation Center won in College Park and also placed second overall as a top workout spot with 23 percent and 29 votes. In …

I have to second the Basket Gourmet - they did my wedding flowers in a pinch, did a beautiful job and were very reasonably priced. Susie and her team are phenomenal! I'm now a loyal local customer :)   more ›
