County police deploying extra forces to five neighborhoods throughout January.
The Prince George's County Police Department will be deploying extra officers in some areas of the county as part of an effort to continue a trend of crime reductions. Each night throughout the month of January, there will be up to 125 extra police working the beat in select neighborhoods where criminal activity has historically been an inssue. The officers will be deployed to five Prince George's County neighborhoods: Langley Park, Riverdale, Suitland, Hillcrest Heights and Glassmanor. Those areas are part of the county's Transforming Neighborhoods initiative, plan to reduce crime through interagency cooperation designed to address the root causes of criminal activity in those neighborhoods. Officials say the county has seen a 35 percent drop in homicides over the past year.
When it comes to crime in Prince George's County, the 1980s are coming back. At a standing-room only news conference at the county's District III police station in Palmer Park, Prince George's County police and government officials announced a year of historically low crime statistics, including drastic reductions in the homicide rate and the residential burglary rate. The last time crime was this low, Ronald Reagan was president and Doug Williams was the Redskins' quarterback. Boy was one of two victims, police say.
A 14-year-old boy has died after being shot in what police believe was a gang-related shooting in Lewisdale early Wednesday. At 12:15 a.m. on Dec. 5, police were called to the 2200 block of Sheridan Street for a report of a shooting. Officers arriving on the scene discovered two males suffering from gunshot wounds. One adult male was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition. The second victim, 14-year-old Eliezer Benjamin Reyes of Lewisdale, was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police said that the preliminary investigation indicates that the shots were fired from a car as the victims and two other witnesses walked down the street together. Robbers posing as customers hit three liquor stores just after opening hours.
A string of morning liquor store robberies has Prince George's County Police warning store owners to keep an eye out for suspicious individuals as they open shop. Police said that in each incident, the stores were robbed shortly after opening their doors by two men posing as customers. Once inside, one of the men pulls out a gun and announces a robbery, police said. Employees are then tied and the duo make off with cash. During one of the robberies, a suspected getaway vehicle was spotted. Police described it as a white SUV that might be bearing temporary Maryland license plates. County police department praised for multi-agency anti-crime initiative.
A multi-agency push to reduce crime last summer in Prince George's County has won acclaim from the Maryland Association of Counties. The intergovernmental association recognized the county police department for its "2011 Summer Crime Initiative" yesterday, awarding it the President's Healthy Counties Award at the annual Maryland Association of Counties conference in Ocean City. Lt. Col. Hector Velez, deputy chief of the county police patrol bureau, said the award shows the county has charted a "new direction" to reduce crime. "It shows that what we are doing is effective and that we aren't taking on this mission alone," said Velez in an interview. The Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention has reported the decrease of violent crimes in the state of Maryland and Prince George's County.
Although 2011 started off with a high number of homicides in Prince George's County, the Maryland Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) is reporting that overall crime decreased in Maryland and the county. Last year, there was a 5.1 percent reduction in total crime with 11,004 fewer crimes reported in 2010 than in 2009, according to the GOCCP. This is the lowest numbers of crimes reporter in the state since Maryland adopted the crime reporting program in 1975. In Prince George's County, the crime rate has been steadily declining since 2006. The county's total crime rate was reduced by 3.8 percent and violent crime by 6.3 percent.
