Prince George's Schools Hosts Food Expo Tuesday

The event encourages good nutrition and healthy eating and is open to the community.

Community members, parents and area school children are invited to the Prince George's County Public Schools Food Expo Tuesday afternoon at Northwestern High School. The event encourages good nutrition and healthy eating and will be hosted by Board of Education Member Amber P. Waller (Dist. 3). Attendees can sample food from various vendors and attend workshops for free. Prizes and giveaways are available for people to win. Lunch Lessons: New Calorie Limits Add Healthier Items, Higher Costs to School Cafeterias

Montgomery and Prince George’s county schools serve more fruits and vegetables, but students may not be eating them.

Every day at lunch, children across Prince George’s and Montgomery counties may be facing what conventional wisdom says is one of their worst nightmares. No, it’s not monsters hiding under their beds or behind their closet doors. It’s not zombies chasing after them, either. It’s fruits and vegetables. After Congress passed a nationwide law limiting the amount of calories schools are allowed to serve at lunch, schools in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties are adhering to the rules and serving up more healthy options for students. “Before this year, each student had to select three out of five items,” said Marla Caplon, Director of the Division of Food and Nutrition Services at Montgomery County public schools. “This year, the student …

UMd. Program Helps Low-Income Families at Local Farmers Markets

The program will help lower-income families explore fresh foods from farmers markets and eat nutritiously.

University of Maryland students camped out at the Riverdale Park Farmers Market Thursday handing out samples of blueberries. The reason: to help local families on WIC and SNAPP, government aid to help lower-income families east nutritiously, choose healthier foods and to shop fresh and local. The students from the School of Public Health will be appearing monthly at the farmers markets in Riverdale Park, College Park and one in D.C. until November, according to Stephanie Grutzmacher, a faculty research associate. Grutzmacher said they may come to the farmers market consecutively for a few weeks just to help get the word out about their program.
