The boys' and girls' teams have faced tough odds this year.
As Northwestern Boys Basketball Coach Terrance Burke looked ahead to the season back in December, he knew some growing pains were inevitable after losing two key players during the offseason — 6-foot-7 center Obinna Oleka transferred and point guard Torre’ Summerville was expelled. Oleka and Summerville combined to average 35 points per game last year. Yet even without those two, Burke was excited about the potential for the season, forecasting big years from guard Nick Speller, forward Joe Johnson and 6-foot-8 center Clayton Higginbotham. The problem for Burke and Northwestern (5-12) has been that while Johnson and point guard John Johnson have stepped up as hoped, the Wilcats have had to deal with injuries to Speller, who has been …

The Wildcats are deep in a slump that they couldn't break on Friday.
The Northwestern Wildcats went into the locker room at halftime of Friday’s game at Oxon Hill with a two-point lead, and quickly expanded it to four early in the third quarter. Then, everything went wrong, as Oxon Hill used a 15-0 run to seize control of the game en route to a 57-42 victory. “We didn’t show up,” Northwestern coach Terrance Burke said. “We didn’t play with any intensity. We beat these guys the first game of the season. We’re just slow — slow reacting on defense, slow reacting on offense. We couldn’t get a steady rhythm in terms of passing the ball.” Senior Nick Williams scored a game-high 20 points for the Clippers (2-9 overall, 2-9 in Prince George's County 4A), who outscored the Wildcats 11-4 in the decisive third quarter…

The Wildcats pulled out a last-minute victory on Tuesday.
The Northwestern boys basketball team rallied back from an 11-point deficit to take a late lead in Tuesday's game at Bladensburg, but due to their inability to put the Mustangs away, they had to sweat it out until the very end. The Wildcats survived a desperation half-court heave from Bladensburg's Khalil Tucker as time expired to earn a 53-50 victory. "It was too much for the heart," NHS coach Terrance Burke, Sr. joked. "We missed about seven or eight free throws down the stretch that could have actually put the game away. So, they just wanted us to wait until the time ran out, basically. They were keeping me on my feet." The Wildcats (3-2) led by three points with 2.9 seconds remaining and had a chance to put the game out of reach, but …

Now in her third year on varsity, Diggs will take much of the offensive load this season.
Northwestern girls point guard Ebonie Diggs watches basketball on TV as much to learn as she does for entertainment. Ever since middle school, Diggs has been a student of the game, which she has played competitively for nearly 10 years, keenly observing and trying to pick up tricks and techniques from such college-turned-WNBA players as Kristi Toliver, Diana Taurasi and Simone Augustus. She then practices them for herself and tries to implement them in her own game. Apparently it has paid off for Diggs, who as just a junior, enters her third season as a starter for the Wildcats, and has played AAU basketball for Team Sol in Silver Spring since she was 8-years-old. "She's a very good young player," said newly appointed Northwestern coach …

Rod Hairston will coach the Wildcats for at least this season.
New Northwestern girls basketball coach Rod Hairston fully recognizes what his Wildcats players have had to deal with during the course of the last month. Eric Sampson, who was entering his fourth season as Northwestern's head coach, was issued a season-long suspension in November amid allegations of recruiting violations. Then, Warren Stephens, a Sampson assistant who had taken over as the Wildcats' interim head coach following Sampson's suspension, resigned Dec. 3, just a week before the start of the season. Hairston, who was dismissed as the head coach at Bishop McNamara in October after only one season at the school, was promptly hired last Monday and wasted no time addressing his team. "I just let them know that I do understand that …
