Historic photographs bring back the days when Prince George's Plaza was an open air mall.
If you've walked through a the Mall at Prince George's, you've probably had to deal with one particular architectural annoyance unique to the shopping center: the vertical support columns which line the main hall. For an unaware shopper, the columns can become an unwelcome surprise if you happen to walk into one while distracted by conversation or an idle glance at your smartphone. But it wasn't always this way. When the mall first opened in 1959 as Prince George's Plaza, shoppers had a lot more room to maneuver because the mall didn't have a roof. With retailers vying for your holiday dollars, stores and malls are pulling out all the stops to lure you into their establishments for Black Friday. So what can you expect from local businesses and malls, if you decide to brave the crowds on one of the busiest shopping days of the year? Volunteers for the breast cancer patient support organization All Shades of Pink will provide the service over the next two weekends.
When it comes to Mother's Day gifts, some might go with a brunch or flowers. But if the present you plan for mom is the wrapable kind, you might want to recruit the help of some volunteers at The Mall at Prince Georges over the next two weekends. Volunteers from All Shades of Pink, Inc. will wrap gifts in Center Court from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 and Saturday, May 12. Donations will support various initiatives of the breast cancer patient support organization.

Santa has officially swept off his sleigh and into the Mall at Prince George's just in front of the Macy's store. Interested in meeting him, or letting him know your Christmas wishes? Make your way to the mall until Christmas Eve for photos with Old St. Nick. The mall is offering digital photo packages with free Shutterfly gift cards and "Shining Stars" plush toys, which allow kids to name their own star. Santa will also host breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Dec. 4. The event will include free face painting, balloon creations and door prizes. Kids also get a free gift bag. I think young people today are doing just fine. I spent my youth enjoying time with my friends while hanging out at Beltway Plaza and Prince George's Plaza (enclosed) and never felt threatened by crime or violence. Beltway had the theaters, PG had better stores. Now we got both the theater and the shops in Hyattsville.   more ›
