Share your favorite traditions and holiday stress relievers with fellow Patch readers.
With all the stress, commercialism and hype that can surround the holiday season, we can easily forget what it is about the holidays that are truly important. Patch Mom Columnist Christa Schmidt wrote this week that she's hoping to steer the focus this year away from gift giving and more toward the experiences with her children, like nighttime walks through the neighborhood to see the lights. So what is it that makes your forget about all the gifts you have left to purchase; all the carbs you'll be taunted by during those feasts; those in-laws you'll be cleaning the house for? What is it that you hope will remind your kids, there's more to the holidays than receiving presents? What are your favorite holiday traditions that you share with …

A look at area trails near Riverdale Park and University Park.
Just a short car ride from the noise and city streets of Washington and College Park, you can find a paved path along a river, lined by abundant grass and plenty of places to stop and take in the view. That’s what Helen Marion of D.C. does. “I’ve been in the area all my life, so I drove by one day and I said, ‘Oh, that’s a good place to walk the dog,’” Marion said, relaxing on the side of the Northwest Branch Trail. She and her dog, Kissie, walk two or three times a week on the trail, which is part of the Anacostia Tributary Trail System. The ATTS has six main connected trails: the Anacostia River Trail, the Indian Creek Trail, the Northeast Branch Trail, the Northwest Branch Trail, the Paint Branch Trail, and the Sligo Creek Trail. …

I like that tradition. Even though Watkins light display might become my favorite tradition now that I'm in Maryland, as a kid I loved opening stockings, having donuts for breakfast, and the anticipation of waiting for gifts. My dad worked in the mornings, so it was up to mom to entertain us long enough until he got back. That meant we had two stockings. : )   more ›
