New Hyattsville Middle Principal, PTA Members Talk Shop

The county cut after school sports for middle schools, but new HMS Principal Kimberly Washington said she would like to offer intramural sports and partner with Nicholas Orem Middle School for that.

Despite some cuts around the county school system, Hyattsville Middle School is fully staffed with instructors this year. Members of the school’s PTA met with new principal Kimberly Washington Wednesday to talk about their goals for the 2011-2012 school year. There are three new staffers at the school this year and two of them are secretaries. Prince George’s County Public Schools slashed one-half of a dance instructor and one-half of an orchestra instructor. But Washington said she’s asking the teachers that remain to pick up that slack and offer rich, well-rounded classes, and perhaps offer a hip-hop type dance class. Great. She wants a hip-hop class. No mention of being on a school improvement plan. No mention of failing to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress goal for 2011. No mention of anything academic, at least as reported here. But maybe the kids can learn hip-hop.   more ›

Principal Susie Long is leaving PGCPS to pursue work with her church.

After 33 years working in the Prince George's County School system, Hyattsville Middle School Principal Susie Long is leaving her post. At the end of the school year, Long will retire from PGCPS to work with young men and women at her church. "This school year has been an absolute joy and exciting challenge for me as a new principal," Long stated in a letter dated May 6 to the school's PTA . "Helping to develop a culture of academic and creative excellence cannot be done without a wonderful staff, energetic, stimulating and complex teenagers, and a great and supportive PTA. "Although, we have not completed and achieved all of our goals, we have certainly seen the progression toward excellence." Long started her work at HMS just last year, …

Regarding who will replace Dr Long: The county will select up to six candidates from their pool of applicants for middle school principal positions. Representatives from the PTA and teachers interview and rank the candidates. The candidates also rank their preferences between schools where they are applying. Hopefully there's a match between who the parents and teachers like and who wants to be …   more ›

Update: Hyattsville Middle School Takes Home Top Music Awards in Two Competitions

The school's creative and performing arts department swept this year's Fiestaval and earned superior ratings at the state level.

Update, May 9: The Hyattsville Middle School CPA choir, having earned straight superior ratings of 1's at the County Festival a few months ago (including a 39/40 on sight-reading), was adjudicated at the state festival on May 6. At the state festival, performing and sight-reading at a level-three (the middle school maximum is level-four), they were one of only about four middle school choirs to earn straight superior ratings of ones at the state level. At the state festival, the choir also earned a perfect 40/40 on the sight-reading. Keep watch for information about the Superiors Concert at Bowie High School on May 13th.     Original Post: The Hyattsville Middle School Creative and Performing Arts Department took home several awards from …

Hyattsville Middle School PTA Outlines Issues for Year

The PTA discussed a contract with parents about after school activities.

"This is your PTA," the organization's president, Errick King, told parents at Hyattsville Middle School Wednesday night. "Whatever suggestions you have could make a better PTA." The organization is scheduled to meet the second Tuesday of every month – Prince Georges County elementary schools meet the first Tuesday of every month and the high school organizations meet the third Tuesday of the month. Susie Long, the new principal at the school for creative and performing arts (CPA), stood up about halfway through the meeting. She addressed parent concerns about issues including dress code, student access to lockers and the number of extracurricular activities –including sports and performing arts rehearsals – that students are allowed to …

Thanks for your comment. It's definitely something I understand can be concerning for parents, especially since after-school activities create a well-rounded student.   more ›

New Hyattsville Middle Principal Works to Improve Student Achievement

Improving test scores and parent involvement top the new HMS principal’s list of goals.

Even though Susie Long has been working in the Prince George's County School system for the past 32 years, this is her first year not only as principal of Hyattsville Middle School but as a principal at all. "I've done everything from being a specialist to teaching to working as a paraprofessional," said the Shreveport, La., native. "Coming back to the school building made sense to me because I had all of this knowledge in all of these areas, but I wanted the opportunity to see how I could [share that with teachers and students]." HMS PTA president Errick King said he is pleased with the way Long is working with parents to help the school. "She's been very open and very informative," he said. "We have access to her continuously and she …
