Winner of Prince George's Housing Lottery Tours New Home

Derek Slocum will pay just $190,000 for a home valued at $250,000.

The winner of a housing lottery run by the Prince George's County Department of Housing and Community Development had a chance to tour his new home in Lanham on Tuesday, WJLA reports. Derek Slocum, currently a District resident, will pay just $190,000 for a rehabbed house valued at $250,000. The housing department purchased the foreclosed home with the help of federal funds after it had sat vacant for a year. Following renovations, the deed was entered as the prize for the county's first-ever housing lottery. "It is simply beautiful," Slocum told county officials and members of the press gathered for the event. Read the full story from WJLA.

Experts say economic strain is pushing residents to move in with relatives and friends.

By AMALIA EHRMANN and MARIA-PIA NEGRO Special to Capital News Service Mana Ali, 27, a graduate student, moved back in with her father and stepmother last year after she realized she could no longer afford to live in the townhouse she was sharing with her cousin. Then, her older sister and two children joined them. Add a stepbrother and half-sister and there are eight people living in a five-bedroom house. Now scattered shoes of different sizes and styles greet visitors in the foyer. Space is tight. Ali's older sister crammed all her belongings into the room where she and her children, 6 and 4, have beds. Ali's room used to be a small office. Sometimes, she said, she wishes for more privacy. But, like many other Marylanders, she's found she…

Cost of housing, daycare and taxes drove the figure up more than 40 percent over 10 years.

By Catherine Irwin Capital News Service Families with young children in Prince George's County need to make more than $50,000 a year to cover just their basic living expenses, according to a new report. That figure is up more than 40 percent over the past 10 years, driven largely by the cost of housing, daycare and taxes. People are increasingly turning to the government and social service organizations for help. The monthly average of food stamp applications has increased by 53 percent since 2007, and there was an increase of about 23 …
