University Park to Light Its Holiday Tree This Saturday

The town’s elementary school choir will open the tree lighting for the first time.

The holiday season is well underway, but in University Park the annual Christmas tree lighting is the official sign that the holidays are here. University Park Elementary School’s concert choir, for the first time, will open the tree lighting with their seasonal songs from a variety of cultures and languages. Mayor John Tabori will light the tree at 7 p.m. “There were usually around 200 people attending the event, but we’re expecting more this time because of the choir,” said Councilman Len Carey, who volunteers with the University Park…

The market — set for this Saturday, Dec. 10 from noon to 8 p.m. in the town center — creates a great opportunity for residents to buy one-of-a-kind presents and to support local businesses and artists while listening to live holiday music. This year’s market will feature more than a dozen locally-based vendors selling handmade jewelery, artwork, wooden toys, and pottery plus Maryland-made wines from Elk Run Vineyards. Maryland tree specialists share the dos and don'ts of holiday tree buying.

Are you ready to trade in your fake Christmas tree for one that comes from nature? Know what to expect before you scrap your artificial tree for the real thing, because the last thing you want is a tree disaster to sap your holiday cheer. Whether you're planning to buy a Christmas tree from a roadside vendor or a 200-acre tree farm, a little tree education could spare you from making some common tree buying mistakes. "Most people don't know anything about trees; they just know they're green and they look pretty," said Chris McGhee, who is selling Christmas trees at Greenway Center in Greenbelt for about $30 ($50 for firs). Don't know your firs from non-firs? Quick lesson: Pines, the non-firs, sprout their needles near the tips of the …

Back in college, my boyfriend (now hubs) loved going to the local tree farm and cutting down our Christmas tree. We lived in apartments back then and we just didn't have the room to store a fake one. We loved it. We used to call it our yearly tree hunt. When we moved down to MD, we tried to find a tree farm like the one we loooved back in our college town. We couldn't for the first few years and …   more ›
