Public Arts Initiative Clears Riverdale Park Council

The town could see new artwork go up in public spaces later this year, with Beale Circle as a possible first location.

Riverdale Park residents may see more murals, sculptures, and paintings around the neighborhood soon following the town's approval of a public art initiative. The project—a joint venture between Riverdale Park Town Council, the Riverdale Park Arts Council, and the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation—aims to place art installations at three to five locations around town, with further expansion possible in the future. Councilman Jonathan Ebbeler (Ward 1) praised the measure, which passed the town council on March 4. “As the town of Riverdale Park continues to grow and evolve we need to define who we are and how we fit in with out surrounding municipalities,” Ebbeler said in an email. “Through this and other efforts we are trying to…

Ms. Pompi Sorry for the mistake. The below listed statement by Mayor Archer on the Town Talk Blog on March 3, 2013 led me to believe the Town was going to pass this ordinance. Was it only read into the record, or will it be passed by the Town Council? "The gateway to Riverdale Park needs to say YOU ARE SOMEWHERE! We the residents of this town deserve better and I for one will not again grant Jey …   more ›

2013 Oscar Nominations Have Definite DC Flavor

Nation's Capital features prominently in three Best Picture nominees.

Three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture prominently feature Washington, DC: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and, of course, Lincoln. While serving as a location for major films is nothing new to Washington, DC, I can't think of another year in which so many DC-centric movies have been nominated. The Washington Post described each movie as "an engrossing, superbly crafted story that plunges viewers into otherwise opaque and unknowable worlds made distant by time, secrecy or both" and believe film attendees will be pleased that the films "enthusiastically celebrate institutions more often mired in dysfunction and public malodor." Argo, the Ben Affleck-directed tale of a CIA mission to rescue Americans caught up in the 1979 Iranian hostage …

Avoid DC Crowds and Head to a Baltimore Museum

The Walters Art Museum is a great place for families.

For parents with kids on the Autism Spectrum, there are many experiences that we have to miss out on due to large, loud crowds. Children on the Autism Spectrum can be over stimulated easily and being put in an environment with a lot of people can lead the child to having a meltdown. My oldest son is on the spectrum and though the meltdowns have become fewer as he’s gotten older, instead over stimulating environments effect his attitude. He becomes “snippy”, short tempered, quick to argue with his brother in other words not pleasant to be around for the rest of the day. We don’t take advantage of the museums in DC as much as we should mainly because of the crowds. Recently we discovered a hidden gem in Baltimore, The Walters Art Museum. …

Utopia Film Festival Opens Saturday

Films from around the world will be shown in Greenbelt.

Films from Australia, Iran, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Canada, as well as from across the United States will be shown at the Eighth Annual Utopia Film Festival. It opens Saturday at 11 a.m. and runs from Oct. 13-21. Nestled in a city birthed 75 years ago according to the Franklin-Delano Roosevelt Administration’s goal to establish cooperative and garden communities, Utopia seeks out and shows independent films that explore Utopian visions. It also sprinkles in a Halloween theme. Local horror show legend Count Gore De Vol from Channel 20 will be there for a screening of "Every Other Day is Halloween," on Oct. 20, and will answer questions afterward. The film festival has a general ticket price of $5, but Utopia is offering free …
