The girls basketball coach is in his 28th year with Prince George's County Public Schools.
After 28 years of coaching girls basketball, Bladensburg High School coach Lester Butler marked a rare milestone this week. On Tuesday, the Mustangs sailed to a 54-27 over Oxon Hill High School, delivering the Washington, DC native and veteran coach his 300th career victory. The accomplishment is one of many from Butler's time at Bladensburg. Since coming aboard in 1989, he's led the Mustangs to the state semifinals (2001), the finals (1995), and a Maryland 3A championship (1993). “Anyone that puts in work in both the classroom and on the court, I promised I would work hard to get them in school,” Butler said in a in a statement. “I tell my kids, ‘There’s a college for everyone. It may be Division I, Division II, Division III or even a …

Former Terps had big plays for the Baltimore Ravens, but the New England Patriots win 23-20.
Many aren't surprised that the Ravens lost in the AFC Championship today. But many were probably surprised by how close it was. “I could easily, easily see the Patriots winning this game by 10 points, and I think I’m being conservative here," Skip Bayless said this past week on ESPN First Take. In the end, it was a dropped ball in the end zone, followed by a missed kick that led to the 23-20 loss against the New England Patriots, who will now move on to play against either the New York Giants or the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, depending on how the next game goes. The Ravens had some big plays to keep the score within three points, including a recovered fumble by LaQuan Williams and a touchdown by Torrey Smith, both former …

About 10 miles from the Redskins stadium, there are plenty of Washington fans in the area. But will they support the Ravens this weekend?
The Ravens might be Maryland's team, but with FedEx Field about 10 miles away, this area is more likely a part of Redskins Nation. At least, that's the way Marcus Afzali sees it. “When the Redskins are doing well, which isn’t often, the number of Redskins jerseys to Ravens jerseys isn’t even comparable," the College Park councilman said. In addition to being a part of the Washington suburbs, the area does have serious ties to the Redskins, like former Eleanor Roosevelt High School player Travon Bellamy, who now plays for Washington. Then there's Josh Wilson and Kevin Barnes, former Terps who moved on to play for the Skins. But the Redskins haven't competed in a playoff game since losing in the wildcard round against Seattle in the 2007 …

After losing her partner in crime, our dog, Misty, is in search of a new exercise routine.
Five days before Christmas, we lost our dog, Jackson. He was diagnosed with wobblers (tumors in his vertebrae) almost exactly a year ago, but his passing took us by surprise and broke our hearts. For days afterward, I cried and tried to console my three children even as I was preparing our home for Christmas and Santa’s arrival. But as the sorrow began to abate, I realized there was one member of our family who would need added attention — not just in the mourning process, but for the rest of her life. Our other dog, Misty — or as we began to think of her, Jackson’s partner in crime — suddenly finds herself alone. For six years she and Jackson raced through the woods behind our house, chasing squirrels or chasing each other. Each time we …

The Bladensburg High School graduate racked up 21 assists in a single game this month for the Lycoming College Warriors.
Riverdale's Jerald Williams leads NCAA Division III men's basketball in assists after posting a record-setting performance earlier this month for the Lycoming College Warriors. According to the college's website, the junior broke both a school and a Commonwealth Conference record on Dec. 17 when he tallied 21 assists during a 116-101 win over Mount Aloysius College. That total — which surpassed his own record of 17 — brought the Bladensburg High School graduate within 12 assists of Lycoming's career record (432) and pushed his season average up to a nation-leading 9.7 assists per game. Lycoming, a small liberal arts college in Williamsport, Pa., is looking to enter the new year with a perfect record for the first time since 1966-67.

Cold winter days do not have to mean dealing with the depression that comes with seasonal affective disorder. Columnist Ann Brennan shares how she fought back and now enjoys Maryland winters.
It is cold outside. It is the kind of cold that has many of us avoiding the outdoors at all costs, moving from car to house or office as quickly as possible. And if we are exercising at all, it is in our homes or at a gym. For most of us, the winter months can mean putting on weight and losing the conditioning we have built up over the rest of the year. Worse still it can mean depression and moodiness brought on by seasonal affective disorder (SAD). According to Medicine Net, “your mood is influenced by a complex web of relationships between sunlight, melatonin (the sleep hormone) and serotonin (the hormone associated with wakefulness and elevated mood). As darkness falls, your melatonin levels naturally increase. And as the morning …

Looking for that perfect gift for the runner in your life? Get creative with a gift basket.
I love gift baskets. I love receiving them, because the gift goes on for so long as I pick my way through, examining each of the items. But I love giving them as well. I enjoy deciding on the theme months in advance and picking up items throughout the year that will make the basket special. I enjoy finding the last minute perishable items to add just a little sweetness, and I enjoy watching the recipient as they go through the layers of gifts. One of the best parts about giving a themed gift basket is that you can’t possibly go completely wrong. With several items to choose from, at least one will hit the spot. My favorite theme basket this year is for runners. Because of the number of hours I spend inside sports stores throughout the year…
