Cafrtiz Meeting Sunday in Riverdale Park

The Riverdale Park Town Council will discuss the Cafritz development detailed site plan.

Weekend meetings are becoming a regular occurrence for the Riverdale Park Town Council, who are meeting on Sunday at to discuss, you guessed it, the Cafritz development.  The Cafritz property is back on the Prince George's County Planning Board agenda on Thursday for a hearing on the Detailed Site Plan (DSP) just one week after preliminary plans were unanimously approved.  The council and mayor will convene at 1:30 p.m. in the town hall in a special legislative session to review the Cafritz DSP, make recommendations on the plan and vote to send a letter of either approval or disapproval of the plan to the planning board. The planning board staff has recommened approval of the DSP with conditions.

In a speech rich with historical references, the first lady reminded the Bowie State class of 2013 why education is important.

  In a speech celebrating the history of Bowie State University and the struggles of African Americans forced to fight for their education, First Lady Michelle Obama told the class of 2013 on Friday that it was time to "feel hungry" again. “For generations, in many parts of this country it was illegal for black people to get an education,” Obama said, telling tales of students who were threatened, teachers who were beaten and schools that were burned when African American first sought education. “But despite the risks, students flocked to these schools in droves,” she said, speaking to a crowd of thousands at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center in College Park. Amtrak to Replace Quarter Century-Old Locomotives Along DC-Boston Route

New locomotives could put $300 million in electricity back on the grid.

Amtrak plans to replace a total of 70 locomotives on its Northeast Regional line, which transports passengers between Newport News, VA, and Boston, MA, according to the dcist website.   Trains on the popular route, which often involve long lines of waiting commuters at DC's Union Station, are pulled by locomotives that are more than 25 years old and feature outdated technology, according to the article. In a May 13 news release, Amtrak president and CEO Joseph Boardman said, “The new Amtrak locomotives will help power the economic future of the Northeast region, provide more reliable and efficient service for passengers and support the rebirth of rail manufacturing in America.” The new locomotives, dubbed “Amtrak Cities Sprinters,” will …

Longshot Oxbow Wins Preakness Stakes

Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, finished fourth.

Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. Oxbow also ended hopes for a Triple Crown winner for another year. Orb, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, never got started from his No. 1 post position and finished a disappointing fourth. I want to correct my previous comment. I have just read in the newspaper that O'Malley did not appear at the Preakness to present the trophy was because he, of course, wanted to attend his daughter's college graduation.   more ›
