There should be special courts for psych cases just as there are special courts for financial,Read More maritime, juvenile, family and other specific types. This does not mean getting off with any difference in time, but it would mean a more accurate routing and disposition of the individuals. In many cases people do not want to change and would rather be sent to standard jails eventually released and still a danger to society.
John Dumas April 18, 2014 at 11:04 am
Some people do not have even an ember of empathy and need more separation from others and extendedRead More treatment, maybe life long, this may or may not be a case. And, many people just do not have a sense of proportionate response. No matter how trivial the response is irrationally disproportionate.

Nothing Is local on here anymore. Terrible decision to drop local editors for this junk no one caresRead More about. I used to love how we knew everything going on around here from the patch. Now nothing...horrible, horrible decision! !!! I keep hoping someone starts their own patch type of thing. I will be dropping this one.

And we don't get any local news. Oxford Patch did not report the burglary's in Oxford.
BBW April 18, 2014 at 11:40 am
We don't have any local news, just boring politics, rained out stories of "Sandy", PoliceRead More stories without names and details. All the usual "cub reporter" crap. Don't blame the reporters it's just an on line "rag". Not even the ability to find stories, investigate a good story, or "MODERATE" the posts and comments. Example Notice the picture of the perp? Check the ears, eyes and face. Wrestler, MMA, brawler? What's your take on the guy, and why did he leave town? Drugs? What did the witnesses say to the cops… lots of good stuff in town, but poor reporting from the "PATCH". No follow-ups either.

what else would you expect from this ugly fat loser monkey she should be shot right away- no jailRead More time but dead within 10 minutes of verdict- you wonder why there is so much racism- well here is a prime example of why there is all of it in this country- that monkey is to fat to swing in the trees
L.B. April 18, 2014 at 10:18 am
I agree with the Judge completely

What about all the ballplayers and entertainers? I don’t care that David M. Zaslav madeRead More $33,349,798. It does bother me that too many Ravens and Orioles players make tens of millions of dollars, thereby driving ticket prices beyond reach for my family.

It's nobody's business what executives of private companies make. They got where they are by doingRead More things that most people aren't willing or are too lazy to do. I'm a private business owner in Maryland and I work my ass off to the tune of 60 hours a week. I bear burdens and responsibilities that my employees don't bear. On weekends when they're out enjoying their lives, I'm at the office. Let's say in 10 years, all this hard work pays off and I become a millionaire. Are my employees entitled to say "that ain't fair"? What about fairness to me??? My guess is that these executives paid their dues and therefore have EARNED the right to be where they are. If they choose to give some of their money away, well that's wonderful and I would respect them for that. But nobody has the right to criticize these people, unless of course their salaries with our taxes which are intended to be used to benefit the taxpayer. But a CEO of a private company? I don't have any respect for, nor will I ever hire any of you who say life isn't fair because they make more than you.
Gary Elwards April 18, 2014 at 10:48 am
Well said "Life". Private business owners also: -Gamble by using their houses andRead More everything else they own to personally guarantee bank loans, property leases (sometimes for as long as 20 years), purchases, etc. -Get late night phone calls about robberies and other emergencies -Can never really get away on vacation to completely relax. -Lay in bed at night trying to get to sleep while worrying about Obamacare, meeting the next payroll and all the other crises that pop up on a daily basis. And for that, you should be ashamed because you are successful? I don't think so.

Right and going by the fine which was 589 times the cost of the soda, BP, that did so much damage toRead More the Gulf should be fined .... 2Billion X 589 .... right, not in the Corporate States of America. That isn't going to happen. How about we apply that same fine to Wall Street .. hell they damn near wrecked the world's economy and have you seen any fines near 589 times the damage done? Direct your ire to the right people ...
Sandra Harrison April 18, 2014 at 10:57 am
Stealing is stealing and it costs all of us. People who eat the grapes at the grocery store withoutRead More paying for them, are stealing! Every item stolen adds up to added costs to everyone. I would have told this person to pay up first before the fine but the fine is always going to be more than the item. The fine is prevent the person from doing it again. Parking in my city overnight on the street used to be a $5 fine and so many people did. They have since raised the fines. This winter those overnight cars caused a lot of problems. They could not remove the snow with cars on the street. People don't think of the consequences before doing something wrong. Yes, people do things that are wrong but why does this it right? The 89 cents is really cheap for a soda so it makes sense that they don't allow refills for free. I have seen people using soda machines with their own cups. It ends up costing me for being honest. Eat me!
carrie April 18, 2014 at 11:06 am
This is ridiculous. Let the guy pay on site. Waste of tax payers money. Theft is wrong, but this forRead More some reason seems different as many restaurants do give free refills.
Maryland utilities are being urged to give residents until the end of May to pay off winter's whopping utility bills. FIle|Patch

Moral of story above! Please, folks, check your bills closely! I hope there were not 'too many'Read More out there who just assumed it was "cold winter and snow" or didn't fall back on philosophy "you can't fight City Hall...particularly those families already struggling to 'make ends meet' and to those elderly folks on a limited pensions! Though PEPCO believes itself to be, they are not 'infallible'.

BGE is forcing its customers to have a smart meter installed. If someone refuses (like me), thenRead More they will be penalized $75 start up, followed by an $11 charge forever on their monthly bill. I would much rather have a human error occur in my reading than to have a monopoly monitoring my energy usage and who knows what else. I've found a way around it...for a while. Then it's on the Plan B.
Pam Hamburg April 18, 2014 at 10:59 am

A horse and carriage ride in a park, fine. But not on busy, crowded city streets. It's cruel to theRead More horse and dangerous to everyone else. I'm with the NYC mayor on this one.

I would like to comment on this article but Patch has violated my 1st Amendment Right multiple timesRead More and does not allow me to comment, leaving me effectively dead.

Patch cannot violate your 1st amendment rights. Only the government can do that.

With prices rising in all industries, I call it the disease of liberal Democrats! And it is theRead More disease that will wipe out civilization!
mark April 18, 2014 at 08:23 am
When taxes are imposed on various industries then to stay in business the prices increase on theRead More consumer! Obamacare , gas taxes, payroll taxes, tolls, the proposed soda and candy tax , your tobacco tax is 75% of what the product really costs! Commercial Property tax increases! Do you people see what's going on here? This country is being destroyed by the Democrats! It is starting to resemble The a Soviet Union! We should change the name of this country to the USSA!

Art: Perhaps we should stick to "killers" and not try to put a "rose" on it byRead More cleaning the waters with references to breaking curfew or robbing a store. Let us just stick with the muddy waters of "murder." I would suggest that mixing subject might be a bit confusing.
art doyle April 18, 2014 at 08:51 am
I respectfully disagree. The justice system is not an emotional one. There is no difference betweenRead More murder and speeding. If you do a crime, there is a penalty. That is the discussion underway, what is an appropriate penalty, not what constitutes a 'rosey' transgression.

what those justifying the casino fail to point out is that National Harbor will also draw gamblersRead More from Maryland. More than likely it will adversely effect the other casinos in the metro area. As far as citizens influencing the design or anything significant about the facility don't hold your breath. That's nothing more than lip service to the gullible. As far as jobs, I 'm sure there will be plenty of low paying ones for the locals.
