Baker Begins Push for National Harbor Casino in Prince George’s Business Politics

A full-fledged casino would bring in tens of millions a year in tax revenue, Baker tells Senate committee.

By Aaron Carter Capital News Service ANNAPOLIS – Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III told the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee Wednesday that a full-fledged casino at National Harbor is in the best interest of the county’s economic development and would bring in tens of millions a year in tax revenue. Last week, Baker released a study he commissioned that said National Harbor, and not Ft. Washington’s Rosecroft Raceway, is the ideal location for a casino in the county. Baker testified Wednesday in support of SB 892, introduced by Sen. Douglas J.J. Peters, D-Prince George’s, which would allow a casino with both slot machines and table games in Prince George’s County. “Here’s another chance for us to build a high-end …

Senate Delays Same-Sex Marriage Vote

Lengthy debate and amendments are expected Thursday.

The Maryland Senate has delayed its vote on same-sex marriage legislation until Thursday. The 47 legislators had planned to take up the bill, which was passed Friday by the House of Delegates, during its Wednesday morning session. The opponents said the procedural delay would allow them time to seek an opinion from the attorney general on several amendments as well as prepare additional amendments that could be offered Thursday. One amendment offered by Sen. Edward Reilly, an Anne Arundel County Republican, would allow the law to go into effect on Oct. 1—thus removing an amendment by Del. Wade Kach, a Baltimore County Republican, that set the effective date as Jan. 1, 2013. "It may look like a placebo but this is really a poison pill," …

Local Christians Mark Ash Wednesday

Many churches in the area are holding special services to observe the beginning of Lent.

For many Christians, today holds special significance as Ash Wednesday. Falling 46 days before Easter, the fast marks the beginning of a period of penitential preparation known as Lent. Many churches observe Ash Wednesday with services that include the placing of ashes on worshipers' foreheads—a sign of repentence and the source of the fast's name. Below are some of the service times for local parishes: Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Riverdale Church at University Park (Presbyterian) St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of College Park St. Jerome Parish (Roman Catholic) St. Luke's Parish (Roman Catholic) St. Matthew's Parish (Episcopal) University Christian Church

How About a Little RESPECT!

Disciplining children doesn't mean putting them over your knee, but it's your job as a parent to teach your children how to behave respectfully.

Family members often tell me how well behaved my children are. Typically, I roll my eyes and say something along the lines of: “Except when they are pushing each other and whining about something or other…” A scene from the hit television show Sex and the City pops into my head, where Miranda runs into an old friend on the street and they each make jokes about the circumstances of their lives; Miranda is single and her friend has no kids. They do this to compensate for how they think people are viewing them. But the truth is… it isn’t until I am around other people’s children, for long amounts of time, that I realize how well behaved my children actually are. On a recent trip to visit family I spent a good portion of the weekend biting my …

Volunteers Clean 2.8K Pounds of Trash From Anacostia

Cleanup removes a mere fraction of litter which enters waterway every year.

A group of about 60 volunteers descended upon the shores of the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River yesterday to try and make the oft-neglected waterway a little bit cleaner. The cleanup was organized by the Anacostia Watershed Society.  At the end of the event, after about three hours of work, they had pulled an estimated 2,875 pounds of litter of all shapes and sizes from the waterway and its shores. That translates to about 115 large plastic bags of trash, plus 2 shopping carts, a rake, a car door, a scooter and a motorcycle.  Despite the seemingly impressive haul, what was taken out yesterday pales in comparison to the amount of litter which enters the river on an annual basis. About 20,000 tons of trash enters the Anacostia and …
