Summer Food Program Offers Free Meals to Children

Beginning June 25, several locations in Prince George’s County will be available for children ages 18 and under to receive free meals through the Summer Food Service Program. 

During the summer, the program reimburses agencies for meals and snacks served in communities where 50 percent or more of the children qualify for free or reduced meals during the school year, according to Joan Shorter, the Prince George’s County Public Schools' food service director.

The meals served may vary depending on the location, but there is a required meal program each sponsor must follow, said Jodi Yard, program specialist for the Maryland State Department of Education.

For a lunch or a dinner, the menu is required to have 1 cup of milk, three-fourths of a cup of mixed fruits or vegetables, a grain or bread and a meat or meat alternate. If a snack is being served, it must be made up of two types of foods, two examples being an apple and string cheese or peanut butter and crackers, Yard said.
