Mosquito Spraying Underway in University Park

Mosquitos in University Park, beware.

Spraying for the biting insects began anew on June 2, as part of the Maryland Department of Agriculture Adulticide Spray Program, according to the town’s website.

If spraying is to occur in University Park, it will take place on Wendesdays between 8 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. In order to participate in the state’s mosquito control program, “The adult mosquito population must meet, or exceed, a minimum density to justify the application of pesticide. Two measurements of adult mosquito density are used in Maryland: (1) landing rate counts, and (2) light traps,” according to the Maryland Department of Agriculture website.

The “minimum landing rate” is three mosquitoes landing on an inspector in a 2 minute period. To warrant ground spraying, a minimum of 12 female mosquitoes must be captured in a light trap.

No advanced notice will be provided prior to spraying. Anyone wishing to be excluded from the spraying should click here to fill out the exemption form.
