Wirt Middle Students Learn With iPads, Apps

Although students are not allowed to take the tablet out of the school building,

“Every time we read a book, we can type our notes right in here,” sixth grader Jennifer Mejia said. “It helps us cause we don’t get bored.”

Mejia showed parents at the , how they practice math with an app, can research on the Internet if they have a question and can even find out what assignments were completed and graded with the help of Edmodo, a secure social network for students and teachers to use in school.

“It’s cool to have an iPad,” Heidy Canales, a sixth grader, said. “You don’t have to stick to the old-fashioned way.”

Students also showed off their knowledge of the equipment when they used the devices to program a presentation about Prince George’s County Schools at an open house in October.

Currently, teachers keep the iPads locked away when not in use, but the school has ordered protective covers so students can carry the devices around with them during the day.
