Summer Food Program Helps Students Eat Well

Local schools offer free food programs so students don't go hungry in summer months.

Although Prince George's County is one of the wealthiest counties in the state of Maryland, there are still hundreds of students each year that rely on school not only for their education, but for two nutritious meals a day.

In order to make sure that these students continue to receive meals during the summer, the Maryland State Department of Education offers a Summer Food Service Program to keep kids well-fed during the summer months.

Schools and programs offering the meals, are provided with a reimbursement for the meals given to students from areas where 50 percent or more of the population qualify for free and reduced meals. The program is open to all children ages 18 and under, as well as individuals 19 years and over who have mental or physical disabilities.
