Prince George's Responders Hold School Shooting Drill

Officials and emergency personnel conducted the scheduled exercise Friday in Upper Marlboro.

Local school officials and emergency responders conducted a training exercise Friday afternoon in Upper Marlboro "to ensure public safety readiness for the upcoming school year," according to Prince George's County police.

The scenario—set up weeks ago but not initially announced for security reasons—was was made public in light of the shooting this morning at an Aurora, CO movie theater.

Spokeswoman Julie Parker said it was part of the police and fire departments' regular conditioning process, but that safety officials wanted to assure residents they train for similar events.

Held at Dr. Henry A. Wise High School, the exercise was a joint effort between the PGPD, the Prince George’s County Fire Department, and Prince George’s County Public Schools.

“Our responsibility to protect our children begins with effective strategies, and is reinforced with joint training exercises with our public safety partners,” PGPD Chief Mark Magaw said in a statement.
