Some Local Schools Meet AYP, Others Miss Goals

Both middle schools and two elementary schools failed to meet the state's standards for 2011.

Maryland School Assessments results were released earlier this summer and as students head back to school in less than a month, it could mean all the difference in how they scored for 2011.

Schools must meet their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goal each year in order to reach 100 percent proficiency in reading and mathematics by 2014.

However, only two area schools met their AYP, while all others failed to meet their goals. In some cases, a school only missed their goal because two subgroups did not meet their individual AYP goals in a particular subject.

In Prince George's County, 66 schools are in improvement or 32 percent of the county's public schools. However, it does not include any of the schools serving Riverdale Park or University Park children.
