The Freddie Mac Foundation has awarded a $250,000 grant to Prince George's County Public Schools for the "principal pipeline" initiative, a program aimed at improving the recruitment, training, and tracking of the system's principals.
The initiative "will provide critical resources for transitioning principals from administrative leaders to instructional leaders focused on student achievement," according to a statement from PGCPS.
Among the specific goals of the program are setting rigorous job requirements for principals, providing them better training opportunities, and improving the system's technological infrastructure to track their job performance.
The system expects to hire about 125 principals and assistant principals over the course of the program.
“Having effective leaders in our schools will positively impact student achievement,” Superintendent William Hite said in a statement. “The grant will expand our efforts to develop strong leaders who not only have the educational qualifications and instructional experience for the job, but also have the ability to inspire and motivate teachers, students and parents.”
The Freddie Mac Foundation's contribution follows a $12.5 million five-year grant from the Wallace Foundation announced earlier this fall.
"We’re excited to join The Wallace Foundation to support the school district as it develops a strong cadre of leaders that will improve academic performance in the years ahead,” President and CEO Ralph Boyd said in a statement.
