University Park Residents to Vote Tuesday for Mayor, Council Members

Balloting runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Riverdale Presbyterian Church.

It's election day in University Park, with voters set to cast their ballots for the office of mayor and three of the town's seven council seats.

Running unopposed for a fourth term in the town's top post is Mayor John Tabori. , the council raised the maximum period of office for the mayor from three two-year terms to four.

Given that he faces no competition, Tabori said he feels "pretty good" about his prospects on Tuesday.

"I'm pleased that the community has been as supportive of me as they have and of the efforts I've made," Tabori said.

No council hopefuls filed to have their name on the ballot before the April 2 deadline, but four residents later registered as write-in candidates.

In Ward 1, initially held off from seeking a second term but signed up for write-in status after no other candidate emerged. He has served on the council in November and previously represented Ward 1 in the late 80s and early 90s.

In Ward 3, 44th Avenue resident Arlene Christiansen is the only registered write-in candidate.

And in Tuesday's sole competitive race, 40th Avenue resident Susan Dorn and Van Buren Street resident Roy Alvarez are facing off for the Ward 7 council seat.

Registered voters can cast their ballots at  (6513 Queens Chapel Rd., side door entrance) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.
