Newest Jobs Report: State Lost 8,900 Jobs, Unemployment Rate at 6.7 Percent

Most job losses in September and October came before the partial federal government shutdown.

Maryland lost 8,900 jobs between September and October, partly due to the 16-day government shutdown, reports the Baltimore Business Journal.

The U.S. Department of Labor released unemployment data on Friday for both months because of the delay caused by the shutdown. The unemployment rate for both September and October came in 6.7 percent, down from 7 percent in August, the Journal said.

Maryland employers cut 8,900 jobs in September and October, a hit that came almost entirely before the partial federal shutdown, according to the Baltimore Sun. The U.S. Department of Labor, which released both months at once as a result of shutdown delays, estimated that 400 jobs were cut in October. The rest of the reductions occurred in September.

Government jobs in Maryland shrunk by 1,000 to 503,800 in October, the Journal reported. Private sector jobs, however, increased by 400 from September.

The private sector's expansion in October was driven by several industries. The two biggest gainers were leisure and hospitality, which added 1,800 jobs, and construction, up 1,500, the Sun said.
