Meeting Roundup: University Park's Council Talks Budget, Grants and Energy

The town council met Monday night.

University Park's town council met Monday night for their regular legislative meeting which including to permit applications, updates from various town officers and a budget discussion.

  • The Civic Association presented a few dates for events in the spring and summer including a stream clean up on April 16. Councilman Mickey Lucas said although he appreciates the help cleaning the stream, he doesn’t want to disturb the ducks nesting grounds. They lay their eggs in stream.
  • Residents at 6719 44th Avenue asked council to approve a permit for a shed. The shed with an attached porch and swing set would be a play place for the resident's young daughter. Although Town Clerk Amy Headley highlighted the possible dangers of the structure, the council approved the project.
  • Council also approved a four-foot gate at 6516 40th Avenue.
  • Chuck Wilson presented council with a report from the STEP UP Committee which highlighted the groups next steps and highlighted their accomplishments from the launch party. Wilson reported that 100 households signed up for audits and more than 10 percent of the town signed a participation agreement.
  • Mayor John Tabori presented the new newsletter editors to council. Todd Stewart, who was present, and his wife, Bridgett Warren, will take over the production of the monthly newsletter.
  • Tabori reiterated his pride for the five Eagles Scouts who were recognized last weekend.
  • Town Clerk Amy Headley reported that the town will hold elections in May. The last day to file to run for office is April 4th.
  • Councilwoman Jacqueline Bradley-Chacon asked council to vote on a new deadline for grant applications, in order to create a more fluid process. However, after a discussion about it, Councilwoman Margaret Mallino asked to table the discussion. Council voted 4 to 3 to table it until the next meeting.
  • Town Treasurer Dan Baden updated council on the usage of funds in the fiscal year 2011 budget and suggestions a few adjustments including adjusting 2010's fund balance from $1.597 million to $1.696 million, transferring $1,800 from police salaries to police supplies and $10,000 from Public Works Payroll Taxes and Benefits to the department's salary. Council voted to approve the changes.
  • Mayor asked for approval of the following grants, which council approved.
  • Lewisdale-University Park Boys and Girls Club will receive $2,500
  • Anacostia Trails Heritage Area will receive a matching grant of $1,800
  • Town of University Park's 75th anniversary committee $4,200
