Meeting Roundup: University Park Town Council

Notes from the November 7 council meeting.

The council met to swear in newly-elected officials and discuss new programs.

  • Though only at the meeting briefly, Mayor John Tabori helped swear in new Ward 1 Councilmember David Brosch.
  • Designs for the Route 1 bus service, which aims to consolidate services and ease traffic, were presented to the council. Marketing options for local businesses include an array of brochures, z-cards, and large wrap-around ads once the project gets off the ground.
  • The price for the fare hasn’t been set yet, but should be a little more than $1. Existing bus stops will be used, with a 20-minute interval in between buses.
  • Numbers for STEP-UP program participants are increasing, with roughly ten people added to the program each month. They will begin tackling street lighting issues with help from Pepco.
  • Public Works has asked the town to be mindful of leaf season and its collection. This week they begin their cycle on a rapid basis and should go through the town at least six to seven times before the season is over.
  • The town was approved for a $20,000 National Trail Gant to reconstruct the path through the park. They’ve considered the possibility of redesigning Adelphi road steps so that a ramp is included.
  • A mutual aid agreement was crafted for the police department, allowing municipalities to assist each other. The responding town’s forces will be under the authority of their own officials throughout assistance processes.
  • Street repairs for the year have been completed, with the exception of the corner of Underwood St. and Adelphi road. The intersection may become a county issue since it’s in their right-of-way.
  • An executive session about Cafritz’ property was postponed, although plans to revert back to the 2008 plans as suggested by Riverdale Park’s council were on the table.
