Meeting Roundup: Riverdale Park's Council Learns About Purple Line, State Highway Projects, Hiker-Biker Trail

Monday evening's work session was chock full of information on upcoming projects.

Riverdale Park's mayor and council met Monday night for their September work session and a brief special legislative meeting. 

Several presentations were made during the evening.

  • Council voted in favor of Town Administrator Sara Imhulse testifying at a county hearing to help the owners of attain a second liquor license for their expansion. The license is for beer and wine sale.
  • Council voted in favor of closing off 5000 block of Nicholson Street and the 5800 block of Riverside Drive to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for . 
  • Riverdale Park Mayor Vernon Archer presented teacher Karen Venable-Croft with an award as she is the Teacher of the Month.
  • Eilleen Navara, of MNCPPC, presented information on the . Park and planning has proposed adding rain gardens and pit stops along the trails. If the memorandums of understanding were completed and the newer items approved, final grading would begin in early December and it would take 8 months to complete construction.
  • Park and Planning has also proposed to turn the tennis court at into a futsol court.
  • Robert Duffy, an engineer with The project, went over the progress for the Purple Line project, including notifying council that they will be hosting workshops in Riverdale about the area's proposed stations. If they project is approved, they will break ground in 2015 with completion set for 2020.
  • The State Highway Administration discussed improvements that will be making at the Route 1 intersections with East-West Highway and Queensbury better. They will also be paving East-West Highway between Route 1 and Kenilworth Avenue next summer, but starting patching work now as to fix the immediate pothole issues.
  • DPW Director Leonard Addison asked the SHA about a .
  • SHA will extend the northbound island on Baltimore Avenue at East-West Highway to prevent people from driving through the intersection from the right turning lane.
  • The owners of finally got their , but have had issues working with the county. They must now apply for a special permit to continue to sell beer and wine in their store, something they've been doing for 23 years. It's not that beer and wine can't be sold in a MUTC property, but there's a special permit required.
  • will host a fall fest from Oct. 26 through Nov. 6.
  • The Ward 6 Councilman Alejandro Silva wants to get speed bumps installed on Spring Lane, Greenway, Jefferson and 54th Street. Speed humps.
  • The council will vote on the to Cafritz at their Oct. 3 meeting. On Monday night, representatives from the Cafritz family, including Jane and Calvin, and the team of developers released new information about the residential aspect of the property. Look for a story Wednesday on this topic.
