Meeting Roundup: Riverdale Park Talks Fences, Earth Day and Spring Events

The mayor and council met Monday night for their March work session.

A number of people spoke Monday night at the Riverdale Park mayor and council meeting Monday night.

  • Eileen Nivera, from MNCPPC, presented information on the Rhode Island Trolley Trail, while Bob Jenner from CKAR spoke about a beautification project along Kenilworth Avenue. 
  • Town Admin Sara Imhulse said the Town Crier will be available Tuesday. Imhulse said one correction is that the farmers market will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and not 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. as it is printed in the crier.
  • Capt. Patrick Timmons, acting police chief, said Riverdale Park Police did a search and seizure on 54th Avenue on March 24, after there was an increase in crime in the area, and recovered $2,000 worth of items and a gun. Greenbelt Police helped with the search.
  • The police department did receive a license plate reader worth $17,000 as a part of a grant. They already have one reader within the department. They also recently hired a police officer to fill a vacancy in the department. 
  • Public Works Director Leonard Addison said the Easter holiday will not affect trash pick-up this month. The next Saturday bulk drop-off will be on April 16.
  • Addison asked that residents sign up for the town's Earth Day/Spring Day clean up on April 9. "If you’re interested in volunteering or for your kids, call dept of public works." It'll take place at the northeast branch of the Anacostia in Riverdale Community Park.
  • Soccer nets are up for residents to begin playing recreationally this spring.
  • Councilman Raymond Rivas (Ward 5) reminded residents of the Easter egg hunt at the Riversdale mansion on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • CKAR President Lenny Wertz  said the group will meet again on April 5th at 7 p.m.
  • On Saturday, April 2, ECO farms will plan for mural on the side of the Kostless store off Kenilworth Avenue. The event will take place from  12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 4913 Critterdan Street in Edmonston. It's open to all.
  • Chris Benjamin asked to used town hall for a model train show on April 23 and April 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Emily Fanning, president of RP Arts Council announced that Arts Fest will be on May 1 in town center.
  • Jim Coleman, market coordinator, asked for the town to provide funding for tents and signs for the farmers market, that can be reused for other town events.
  • The Riverdale Park Lion’s Club  will host the fifth annual carnival  from April 21 through May 1.
  • Resident Andrew Brown applied for a zoning variance so that he can build a garage in his backyard.
  • Council discussed an application to replace existing fence with a 6-foot fence at 4512 Oliver Street with the resident.
