Meeting Round Up: University Park Awards Residents, Talks Town Anniversary

A look at what happened at University Park's mayor and council meeting on Feb. 28.

University Park's mayor and council met Monday night for their second legislative meeting of the month.

Here's what they discussed:

  • Resident Sarah Moseley spoke with the council about upcoming town events celebrating the town's 75th anniversary. Moseley told council that an author is writing a biography on Jim Henson and will be coming to town to talk to people who knew him. Currently, the author is identifying Henson's home town as Hyattsville, but it's really University Park. She'd like to plan a tribute to Henson, maybe renaming the Christmas tree triangle—Henson Green—in honor of what would have been his 75th birthday this September.
  • Mayor John R. Tabori said the civic association has requested that town decorate Queens Chapel Road with American flags for Fourth of July and he hopes to get 75th banners to place around town.
  • Police Chief Michael Wynnyk awarded three residents for their dedication to the town. Residents Ed Wells, Julio Chavez tackled a drunk driver that crashed into a car on Underwood Street and then ran when he heard sirens. While Pete Greeves has helped town fix its radio system.
  • Tabori said that they should have an RFP for the street maintenance plan together soon and will open bids on April 25th. He wants council to put together a budget committee this year. There is money for the contractor to do the study on nine ponds.
  • The charter amendment passed unanimously.
  • Council suspended determining a process for the community grant proposals.
  • The budget amendments presented to council by the town treasurer were accepted.

*Council gave the counter-protesters an area to gather Tuesday morning, but the event has taken place by the time this article was published.
