Maryland Highway Administration Launches Free Travel Information System

Maryland commuters can now call 511 for up-to-the-minute information about their drive home.

If you've ever been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on any Maryland road, you may have been wondering what was going on and if it would add time to your commute.

Now, the information will be available to commuters who call 5-1-1.

The State Highway Administration launched a new information system Thursday. Drivers can call the number prior to leaving home or work or when leaving for a journey to the beach to learn about road repairs, car accidents and other obstacles they might face on their commute.

“Take advantage of 511 and its benefits, but please do so safely,” said Acting SHA Administrator Darrell Mobley. “It’s a good time to remind Marylander drivers about the laws restricting hand-held phone use and texting while driving. Access 511 before heading out or after pulling over to a safe location.”

The number 511 was designated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is used in other states for similar information.
