First Lady Michelle Obama Visits Olive Garden in Hyattsville

The First Lady was there as a part of her campaign against childhood obesity.

There were some more cars and security in the parking lot of The Mall at Prince George's Thursday when First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the Olive Garden in Hyattsville.

Obama was campaigning for healthier food options for children when eating out at restaurants. She's been championing for healthier living in her “Let’s Move” campaign since 2010 and lauded the efforts of Darden Restaurants, Inc.—the company owns Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze and Red Lobster—which agreed to reduce the amount of calories and sodium in its foods in the coming years.

The plan includes:

  • Reducing sodium by 10 percent in the next five years and 20 percent in the next 10 years
  • Ensuring children's menus which use specific nutrition standards to aid in development of its children's meals
  • Making fruits or vegetables the default for side dish options and with children's meals
  • Making an 8-ounce serving of 1 percent milk the default beverage for kids and allowing milk to be served with free refills.
