Prince George's County Bag Fee Rejected

A legislative push to allow the county to impose a tax on disposable shopping bags failed by one vote.

A proposed 5-cent bag fee backed by both County Executive Rushern Baker and the Prince George's County Council fell just one vote short of passage Monday in the House Environmental Matters Committee, the Washington Post reports.

The measure would have given county lawmakers the authority to impose a tax on disposable shopping bags, similar to fees already in place in Montgomery County and the District of Columbia.

Prince George's County Delegation Chairman Melony Griffith (District 25), who represents parts of Laurel, opposed the measure, citing concerns about the impact a bag fee could have on low-income residents.
