$69 Million In Engineering Funds Set Aside For Purple Line

Maryland has made its first funding commitment for the contested light rail line.

The State of Maryland has set aside $69 million in state transportation funds for the engineering of the , a proposed light rail system stretching from Bethesda to New Carrollton with a stop in Riverdale Park.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) announced the decision Thursday, according to the Washington Examiner, which comes after federal transit officials of the contested project in October. 

It marks the state's first budget commitment to the light rail line.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.925 billion, the Examiner reports. It's slated to open in 2020, with construction beginning in 2015.
