Home on Riverdale Road Sustained $200,000 of Damage After Fire

Firefighters had to wait 15 minutes for Pepco to arrive before they could start controlling the blaze.

The house fire on the 5400 block of Riverdale Road Wednesday night caused $200,000 worth of damage, according to Prince George's Fire Department Spokesman Mark Brady.

Brady said when firefighters arrived to the scene at 5404 Riverdale Road at 9:48 p.m., they discovered an overhead power line had fallen onto the roof of the house, starting the fire.

Firefighters had to wait on scene for 15 minutes until Pepco arrived to begin controlling the blaze, he added.

Although no one was injured on the scene, residents of the home were displaced.

Update, 11:55 p.m.: The house fire caused power outages on the east side of the bridge on Riverdale Road. Power was out for those residents until about 10:30 p.m., according to some of Patch's Twitter followers.

Update, 11 p.m: Riverdale Fire Chief Charles Ryan said firefighters had to wait until Pepco arrived before they could work on the blaze, because live wires were down on the scene.

Update, 10:10 p.m.: The fire is in a one-and-a-half story Cape Cod-style house. There are no injuries reported, according to Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.

Original Story, 9:55 p.m.: A single-family home caught on fire in the 5400 block of Riverdale Road. Firefighters are on the scene.

The fire, which started just after 9 p.m., engulfed the roof and top floor of the house and sent smoke out in a two-block radius.

Neighbors from the apartment buildings stand outside watching the firefighters work.

Pepco is also on the scene investigating the fire.
