Police Urge Cautious Driving Around Northwestern Tuesday Morning

Local police expect heavy traffic around the high school during the anticipated Westboro Baptist Church protest.

Hyattsville police will be on the site of a protest by the on the morning of March 1.

No roads in Hyattsville will be blocked off due to the event, which also includes a counter protest by area residents, said Hyattsville Police Spokesman Sgt. Chris Purvis.

If things get out of control, that could change, Purvis said.

University Park Police Chief Michael Wynnyk said although the protesters will be on the 3900 block of Van Buren Street from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., no streets will be closed to residents.

Wynnyk noted however that the protest is taking place during the school day's opening, so there will be bus traffic and other commuting traffic.

Police have alerted residents that extreme congestion is expected in the area from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Residents and travelers are urged to avoid this area during this time.
