Police Plan Sobriety Checkpoint in Riverdale
Come Friday night, drivers using the Riverdale Road corridor can expect to encounter a sobriety checkpoint.
A sobriety checkpoint will be in full swing along the Riverdale Road corridor come Friday night, according to a press release supplied by the Prince George’s County Police Department.
The checkpoint, which will be enforced by the department’s Special Operations Division, will begin tomorrow at 9 p.m. and stretch six hours.
Cpl. Henry Tippett, a spokesman for the police department, attributed part of the decision to initiate a checkpoint to the county’s high incidence of fatal accidents.

“We definitely have led the state of Maryland in fatal crashes over the last couple of years,” said Tippett. “So that’s certainly something we’re trying to change.”
It all comes down to summer-season safety, added Tippett, whose press release also emphasizes that the department wants to “encourage those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol to designate a sober driver if they choose to drink.”
