Overall Violent Crime Rate in State, County Reduced

The Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention has reported the decrease of violent crimes in the state of Maryland and Prince George's County.

Although 2011 started off with a high number of homicides in Prince George's County, the Maryland Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) is reporting that overall crime decreased in Maryland and the county.

Last year, there was a 5.1 percent reduction in total crime with 11,004 fewer crimes reported in 2010 than in 2009, according to the GOCCP.

This is the lowest numbers of crimes reporter in the state since Maryland adopted the crime reporting program in 1975.

In Prince George's County, the crime rate has been steadily declining since 2006.

The county's total crime rate was reduced by 3.8 percent and violent crime by 6.3 percent. Property crime also was decreased by 3.3 percent. The violent crime rate is the lowest it's ever been since 1978.
