Mugging Leaves Hyattsville Man in Hospital

Man attacked in West Hyattsville in late night robbery.

A West Hyattsville resident was taken to the hospital after he was beaten during a robbery on 31st Avenue late last night.

According to Chris Purvis, public information officer for the Hyattsville City Police Department, the victim was walking along 31st Avenue near Lancer Drive when he was attacked from behind by two assailants and knocked to the ground.

According to one local resident who knows the victim, the attack happened at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Once on the ground, the victim was hit with a handgun several times. The victim was knocked unconscious for a short time as a result of the attack.

The assailants stole property from the victim before fleeing on foot down 31st Avenue.

Police do not have a detailed description of the assailants, with Purvis describing police as being on the look out for two black males, one of whom was wearing a white tee shirt, white tennis shoes and black shorts.

Anyone who has information about this incident is encouraged to call Detective Zach Nemser at 301-985-5060.

In regards to the police car on lancer and 31st, unless they are equipped with a camera then it will probably not be an effective deterrant. The criminals are probably residents or at the least very familiar with the area and know that the cars sit empty and go unmonitored for most of the day.

I agree with you 100% it is time, "WE THE PEOPLE" star taking care of these matters, the police can only do so much and when they do arrest one of these criminals they are let out of jail in a week by some liberal democrat judge, over and over in this state. this whole county in a crime zone and it is a shame nobody has the seeds to step up and tell the truth our citizens are porducts of years of liberal policies and the destruction of the 2 parent family, now it is a single mother who can't take care of herself and her new partner Uncle Sam, the ydo not report who the babie daddys are becaus ethey would have to pay child support and they mother would be off the welfare system, we are doomed as a society till the culture changes

Yeah, there is crime in Virginia, but at least twice as much violent crime in Maryland. People in DC and MD just sort of shrug when this kind of stuff happens but there are two punks out there who got away with this and probably many other crimes and a guy with an emergency room bill and a dent in his forehead. When innocent people's livelihoods are at stake, I'd say the state and our community need to step up and stop letting these thugs run the street. As citizens, if you see shady people lurking along commuter footpaths, I highly recommend calling the police to report suspicious activity. Once the crime is already happening, the police aren't going to be there to help. I also think more security camera's placed throughout the city would help deter criminals. Since the camera was installed in Calvin Memorial park by PG plaza, I feel much safer walking home from the metro. Even one violent crime is too many.

To all concerned neighbors who commented your thoughts, feelings - thank you. Time to take back our neighborhood and report suspicious persons to the police. To D. Scott, I did not see the police cars on Lancer or 31st Avenue Thursday evening or this morning, so your observation is correct!
