Victim of Fatal Riverdale Shooting Identified

Devon Mansa Gilkes, 19, was gunned down at his home in the 6400 block of 61st Pl.

Update, 10:17 p.m.:

"It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of one our 12th grade students," Parkdale High School principal Cheryl J. Logan wrote Thursday in a letter sent home to parents [view letter].

In the message, which does not mention Gilkes by name, Logan urged parents to speak with their children "regarding their feelings and seek counseling support at school, through your faith community, or health care provider."

Logan also said that parents may notice an increased police presence at the school following the shooting.

Officials have identified the victim of Wednesday's fatal Riverdale shooting as 19-year-old Devon Mansa Gilkes.

Police responding to a report of a shooting late Wednesday in the 6400 block of 61st Place found Gilkes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Gilkes was a student at Parkdale High School.

"Detectives are working to identify the suspect(s) and establish a motive in this case," the Prince George’s County Police Department said in a statement. "The investigation is ongoing."

Update, 12:17 p.m.:

The victim of Wednesday's fatal shooting on 61st Place was a 19-year-old student, according to Prince George's County Public Schools spokesman Briant Coleman.

The student's name has yet to be released, Coleman said, but the school will be sending a letter home to parents and robocalling their homes Thursday to notify them of the death.

Counselors will also be on hand at the school for those requiring their services, Coleman said.

A man was shot and killed outside of a Riverdale home late Wednesday, according to Prince George's County Police.

Cpl. Mike Rodriguez told the Associated Press that officers responded to a report of a shooting around 10:15 p.m in the 6400 block of 61st Pl. There, police found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The unidentified victim was reportedly transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe two individuals in dark clothing approached the man while he was sitting on his porch, according to the AP, and that at least one of the two shot him.

Police are still searching for suspects.
