McGill passed away Sunday, May 27 in Sumter, SC.

James L. McGill, a former chief of the , passed away Sunday, May 27 in Sumter, SC. He was 55.

According to the RFD, McGill began his service with the department in 1973 at the age of 16. He rose through the ranks, eventually serving as chief from 1981 to 1986. As a 10-year veteran, McGill was honored with Life Membership in the department.

McGill later moved to the , where he served as assistant chief. He eventually relocated to South Carolina for family commitments.

"Our prayers and sympathy go out to his family and friends," the RFD said in a statement.
